Water and sanitation
Also known as WASH in Dzaleka, Water supply in Dzaleka
A reference entry on water supply, latrines, handwashing, and waste management in Dzaleka, based on UNHCR's August 2024 reporting.

Water supply
UNHCR reported in August 2024 that Dzaleka’s primary water sources were boreholes connected to 36 functional handpumps and 13 functional electrical pumps. The electrical systems supplied 275 functional taps, including taps at institutions.
These figures are a dated infrastructure snapshot. Pump and tap availability can change because of repairs, seasonal conditions, congestion, power, and maintenance.
Sanitation and hygiene
The same fact sheet recorded approximately 324 communal latrine stances, including institutional facilities. In the 2023 annual WASH household survey, 84.5% of households reported having their own sanitation facility. Only 30.3% reported a handwashing device and 54.5% reported access to soap.
Solid waste
UNHCR estimated that Dzaleka produced more than 25,000 kilograms of waste each day, over 80% of it organic matter. Waste was collected through 13 established collection sites before transport to a central disposal site, although accumulation outside designated areas remained a challenge.
Interpreting the data
Infrastructure counts do not by themselves show whether every household receives adequate daily service. Distance, queuing, breakdowns, water quality, household size, and conditions in older congested sections all affect lived access.
