Origins

There Is Hope was founded in 2006 by Innocent Magambi after his own experience of growing up as a refugee and later working at Dzaleka. The organisation developed around the principle that refugees and nearby Malawian communities should have access to education, skills, and income opportunities that reduce dependence on emergency assistance.

The organisation has deliberately worked with both refugee and host communities. This approach recognises that Dzaleka’s economy and public services are connected to surrounding villages and that programmes can strengthen coexistence as well as individual livelihoods.

Vocational education

There Is Hope is registered as a technical and vocational training provider in Malawi. Its published courses include bricklaying, carpentry and joinery, fabrication and welding, plumbing, solar photovoltaic installation, and tailoring and fashion design.

The organisation reported in 2023 that more than 1,000 young people had received technical and vocational training and that 200 young adults had participated in its leadership development programme. These are cumulative programme figures reported by the organisation, not current enrolment.

Enterprise and education

There Is Hope has also operated scholarships, enterprise and income-generation programmes, and Kibébé, a social enterprise working with artisans at Dzaleka. Its programmes emphasise skills that can be applied to employment or small-business activity.

Leadership

Founder Innocent Magambi led There Is Hope for fifteen years before moving into refugee-rights advocacy. The organisation’s current team and programme details are maintained on its official website.
