Congolese DJ, also known as Goldine, profiled for developing her music practice and performing in and beyond Dzaleka.
Music in Dzaleka
Goldine, known publicly as DJ La Pearl, came to Dzaleka from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. A friend taught her the fundamentals of DJing, and she began playing in venues inside the camp.
The World Food Programme’s 2021 profile described La Pearl as the only woman DJ then playing in Dzaleka’s clubs. It recorded the criticism she faced for entering a field viewed by some people around her as unsuitable for women.
Performance
La Pearl continued performing and began securing sets outside Dzaleka. WFP later used her photograph in a 2023 article about women’s participation and access to digital opportunities.
