Clementine, known professionally as U-Cley, is a Rwandan photographer and videographer profiled while living in Dzaleka. She trained through a six-month photography and videography course offered by Vijana Africa.
Her account describes entering a field in which she saw few women role models. Participation in Plan International’s Girls Get Equal Club helped her challenge the assumption that photography was not a suitable career for women.
U-Cley
During a Spotlight Initiative monitoring visit, representatives from the European Union, UNHCR, and Plan International Malawi pledged equipment to support her work. With access to a camera, Clementine began taking paid assignments for weddings, music videos, documentaries, and portraits under the U-Cley name.
