Background

The Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, adopted in 1984, is the main international treaty prohibiting torture and other forms of ill-treatment. Malawi became a party to the Convention in 1996, committing to prevent and punish acts of torture.
