Protocol Relating to the Status of Refugees (1967)

The 1967 Protocol removed the temporal and geographic restrictions of the 1951 Refugee Convention, expanding its scope. Malawi acceded in 1987, with reservations.

Background

The 1967 Protocol relating to the Status of Refugees removed the original 1951 Convention’s limitations relating to events occurring before 1951 and within Europe. It thus gave the Convention universal coverage. Malawi became a party to the Protocol in 1987, with certain reservations. The Protocol, together with the 1951 Convention, forms the core of international refugee protection law.
