MIT RAISE Partners with ADAI Circle: Building AI Literacy in Dzaleka
MIT's RAISE initiative collaborates with ADAI Circle in Dzaleka Refugee Camp to co-design AI education curriculum for refugee youth.
In 2022, MIT’s Responsible AI for Social Empowerment and Education (RAISE) team began working with ADAI Circle, a nonprofit in Dzaleka Refugee Camp that trains refugees and local youth in AI, software development, and hardware design.
Through weekly meetings, classroom recordings, and student project reviews, both teams learned from each other. RAICA staff gained insight into cross-cultural education with multilingual learners, while ADAI teachers and students shaped what the curriculum looked like on the ground.
The partnership led to concrete changes: vocabulary supports were added to make technical content clearer, concepts like “design values” were presented in new ways, and materials were designed to work in print and across different devices.
This fall, 15 students at ADAI Circle will pilot three RAICA modules: Picture This, Social Robots, and Capstone. The focus shifts from refining materials to measuring impact—studying how students innovate and how teachers guide learning.
