The Tumaini Festival Grounds serve as the beating heart of Dzaleka’s most famous cultural export. Founded in 2014 by Trésor Nzengu Mpauni (Menes), the Tumaini Festival is a one-of-a-kind, large-scale music and arts festival held entirely within the borders of a refugee camp.
This space transforms annually to host thousands of visitors—both refugees and international guests—who gather to celebrate music, poetry, dance, and visual arts. Beyond its role as an entertainment venue, the grounds represent a powerful statement of resilience, breaking down the stigma associated with refugee status and fostering profound intercultural dialogue.
The area is an essential landmark for community memory, embodying the living tradition of Dzaleka’s diverse creative population and their ongoing contribution to Malawi’s cultural landscape.
