Site Description

The Salama Africa Creative Centre is a magnificent, multi-purpose space located within Dzaleka Refugee Camp. Transformed from an open practicing area into a well-equipped facility, the centre serves as a hub for free thought, entrepreneurship, and innovation. It provides a healthy, professional environment where dancers, musicians, painters, and other artists can practice and advance their work daily.

The structure itself was built largely by the members of Salama Africa, who provided the manual labor to level the site, dig the foundation, and manage materials, demonstrating the community’s deep commitment to the project.

Statement of Significance

The centre represents a significant “psychological shift” for the youth in Dzaleka. In an environment where options for recreation and professional development are often limited, the centre provides a safe alternative to harmful practices, such as substance abuse, by offering a constructive outlet for talent and energy.

It is also an economic engine for the community. By hosting events like wedding receptions, parties, training, and conferences, the centre generates revenue that supports its maintenance and programming, proving that refugee-led initiatives can be sustainable and impactful.

History & Background

  • July 2018: Project launched with a $8,533.10 grant from World Connect.
  • Construction Phase: Salama Africa members performed the majority of the labor, leveraging an additional $16,000 from UNHCR to complete the ceiling, floor, and interior finishes.
  • November 2019: Final project report published, marking the transition from construction to a fully operational arts and business hub.
  • Current Impact: The centre provides full-time employment for community members and trains dozens of young people in dance, painting, and event decoration.

Associated Events

The centre is a primary venue for:

  • Wedding receptions and community parties.
  • Professional training and conferences.
  • Daily rehearsals for Salama Africa’s dancers and musicians.
  • Art exhibitions and children’s painting workshops.

Condition & Preservation

The facility is maintained through revenue generated by its own event-hosting services. It remains in high use and serves as a model for community-driven infrastructure within Dzaleka.
