History
ADAI Circle — Africa Deep Artificial Intelligence Circle — was established in Dzaleka on 2 February 2020 by Byamasu Patrick Paul and Amisi Hassan Jospin. It concentrates on artificial intelligence and data science, alongside software development and hardware design. Its innovation hub also offers internet access, which is otherwise scarce and expensive in the camp.
MIT partnerships
Co-founder Amisi Hassan Jospin’s route ran through MIT’s Emerging Talent programme, and the organisation has adopted the MIT Bootcamps model for its annual hackathon. In 2023, ADAI Circle connected with MIT’s Responsible AI for Social Empowerment and Education (RAISE) initiative, piloting the Responsible AI for Computational Action curriculum with students in the camp — covering skills such as chatbots and natural language processing.
Context
ADAI Circle is one of several refugee-founded technology education initiatives in Dzaleka, alongside TakeNoLab and the Dzaleka AppFactory.
